Our projects– a2a course

Access to Art (a2a)

Jane and Louella in their special coats

a2a is a radical arts project in which artists with learning disabilities work alongside undergraduate art students from the University of Brighton. Over the past four years it has established a pioneering model for inclusive learning and now provides a unique platform for research into teaching methods.

Printing workshop
In the past we have:
  • Shown our work in public places;
  • Made individual artworks in painting, drawing and print;
  • Designed and printed T-shirts.

Making sculpture at Breathing Spaces
We have also:
  • Studied the figure from life;
  • Worked to make group installations;
  • Made sculptures from natural materials at Breathing Space in Stanmer Park.

Taking photographs for research
We have used these methods:
  • Visited museums and galleries;
  • Used photography to record ideas.

Year 1 focuses on building creative skills so that students can make informed choices about making their own work in Years 2 and 3.

The a2a course is open to people with a love of making art who want to develop their skills and experience new ways of working. The a2a course runs every Tuesday during term time at Phoenix Arts Association. Students are enrolled with Sussex Downs College. If you are interested in joining the a2a course contact Alice Fox.
